Meet Chelsea Koenig!

Welcome, readers! Meet veteran company dancer Chelsea Koenig!

1. How long have you been dancing?

I have been dancing since I was a wee tot of 3 years old. My professional career has lasted 10 years as of this year!

2. Tell us about your hobbies outside of dance.

Dancing and teaching dance takes up a lot of my time, but in my free time I love to binge watch Netflix shows. I am currently re-watching all of 'Friends' and my recent binge was Queer Eye! My "hobbies" usually include spending as much time with my husband and 2 kids as I can! Whether it's snuggling and watching movies or helping them with whatever creative project they're dreaming up, my time is always well spent.

3. Dogs or cats?

I have had both dogs and cats as pets. I can say I lean more towards dogs, but I love all animals!

4. How did you come to dance with KCCD?

When I started with KC Contemporary, it was almost by accident. I had my son two years before joining the company and wasn't sure if I would be able to or had time to dance for myself again. Back in 2012 the company was under different direction, and 2 of the 3 directors were old friends of mine. They asked if I would like to take class with the company and see if it was a good fit. I ended up enjoying it so much that I stayed and have been lucky enough to be with this company through its transitions and growth and lots of success. I just started my seventh season and am so grateful to still be dancing with KCCD!

5. Favorite musical artist or band?

Ok for this one I have 2! I'm a lover of so many different kinds of music, I picked one "oldie" and one more current. I have to go with David Bowie and Devotchka.

6. What was your favorite performance experience and why?

My favorite performance experience actually ties into the last question! When I performed with Quixotic, we had a close relationship with the band and aerialists from Devotchka. They invited us to perform as their opening act on Valentine's Day one year in their hometown of Denver. It was SO much fun traveling and performing for their audience. They have such an amazing energy and culture; my family is still friends with them after almost 10 years!!

7. This is our 15th season as a company. What does this mean to you?

KC Contemporary Dance is celebrating our 15th season! Since I am considered to be one of the veteran members (ahh!) I have seen the company go through change and growth and struggles and triumphs! Our vision has always stayed the same, but we have been able to ride the tides and stay relevant, which is a difficult thing to do in the world of art. Kansas City is so diverse and eclectic, and I love that we have found our place and can offer great dancing and artistry to a growing scene of art lovers in our city! Thank you to everyone who has supported us or danced with us over the last 15 years! We are still going strong because of our community support. We look forward to bringing you more entertainment for the next 15!
